Fallow Deer
DESCRIPTION:
Length: 4-5 feet; shoulder height about 3 feet. Weight: 90-175 lbs. Has two color phases: summer color acquired in May is bright fawn with white spots above and whitish underparts; winter coat acquired in October is grey-brown without spots. Tail is black on upper side and white below. Antlers of the males are flattened and palmate with numerous points. Have no upper canines. Fawns are spotted at birth.

GEOGRAPHICAL RANGE AND HABITAT:
Originally ranged throughout the Mediterranean region of southern Europe and Asia Minor; has been widely introduced and now found throughout western Europe, western Ukraine, the Baltic countries, Great Britain, and in a few areas of the U.S. Inhabits forests.

DIET:

Main food is grasses; also likes acorns, horse-chestnuts, beech mast, brambles, and other wild fruits. Browses on twigs of hardwood trees and bushes.

LIFE CYCLE/SOCIAL STRUCTURE:
Fallow deer live in herds, divided into two groups: (1)females and young; and (2) males. Mating occurs in September to October. Bucks assemble the does in groups and fight off rivals. Throughout mating season bucks do a dance-like ritual and bellow deeply to attract the females. Season lasts about 4 weeks. Gestation period is 230 days; usually one fawn born in June or July. Fawn is suckled until the following spring. Males develop a single unbranched antler in their second year, and each succeeding year the antlers are larger and have more points until the fifth or sixth year. Antlers are generally shed in April and new ones are full grown and free of velvet in August. Life span is about 15 years.

SPECIAL ADAPTATIONS:

Keen sense of sight; able to see a motionless person.

INTERPRETIVE INFORMATION:

Among those deer most commonly found in parks. The keeping and breeding of fallow deer for centuries has produced animals that are white, black, reddish, and "porcelain-colored". Herds have done serious damage to forestry and agriculture so that control by shooting is sometimes necessary.

STATUS IN WILD:

Protected in some Mid-Eastern regions.
